PT assistants conduct their services underneath the supervising and direction of a certified physical therapist. PTs rely greatly on their Physical therapy assistants, so it's necessary that a Physical therapist assistant can offer patients a complete plan of physical therapy exercises. PTAs apply numerous physical therapy methods when caring for clients. Several techniques include physical modalities, deep tissue tissue massage, exercise therapy such as ultrasound and electro therapy as well as functional training.

In addition PTAs commonly assist their patients to avoid losing movement by creating health and fitness programs to enable more active healthier life styles. Whenever a Physical therapist assistant sees a patient first, the PTA helps the physical therapist examine the person and create a care program encouraging restored functions, the ability to move, avoiding disability and pain reduction. Then, as a team, the PT, PTA, and patient all work with each other to make sure the goals of the health program is reached, calculating the patient's progression, response, and safety while making modifications as needed.
