The above list of physical therapist assistant schools online offers the majority of their online PTA program (roughly 75%) through distance learning coursework to PTA students.
Prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, fewer schools offered online physical therapist assistant programs. Due to campuses shutting down in early 2020, now most of the PTA programs across the country are offered online in a distance learning format. It is best to inquire with each school directly regarding how much of their program is offered online.
If these online PTA schools arenāt a good fit for you, then look into physical therapy assistant programs nearby. Many of these local schools will offer some courses through distance learning but only roughly 75% of the program will be offered online. This is because online physical therapy assistant programs still require clinical training.
The next table below contains the actual curriculum for PTA classes online and which ones are only offered in person.

What You Will Learn Through Online Coursework
Below is a list of some of the qualities and skills you develop in your PTA degree program. These skills are meant to show a student’s competence in professional practice, but they can also help them to pass the NPTE exam.
Kinesiology and Anatomy:
You will gain an extensive understanding of the various systems that make up the human body (especially skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular, nervous, etc) in order to practice physical therapy. Kinesiology is a branch of science that focuses on human body movement and how it works. In its broadest sense, it covers the study of human anatomy and physiology, but you will learn about other topics such as biomechanics too. PTA students should expect their coursework to go into detail about many different Anatomy-related topics.
Exercise Physiology:
Anatomy and kinesiology are your intro classes before exercise physiology coursework begins. You will learn about the physiology of the human body specifically during movement and exercise. Emphasis is placed on the neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary and metabolic systems as they relate to exercise methods – acute and chronic. Pathological conditions that affect activity are also explored.
Communication:
Physical therapists have a lot of different people to interact with in a day. They spend their day talking with clients, PTs, doctors, etc. and typically have to take notes on all of it. Superior communications skills are therefore a must. The communication courses cover oral comprehension and expression, speech clarity, written comprehension, & writing competency.
Skills Learned in Clinical Practicum
PT Treatment with Patients: During a clinical practicum PTAs are hands on and teach patients about their specific exercises. They also help them with the treatment exercises by showing them how to perform them and assisting them during their routine. Your PTA Programās clinical training may also provide you with massage therapy practice or instruct you on rehabilitation exercises or how to use adaptive devices, like walkers and crutches.
Diagnosing and Evaluating Patients: Physical therapists are being assisted by physical therapy assistants, who are helping the therapists by observing the movements of patients are assisting in physical therapy. Physical therapists also need to observe their patients before, during, and after treatment in order to provide feedback. They oversee the progress of the patient and make sure they don’t miss anything.
Empathy and Compassion: As altruistic as it is, compassion can be characterized by a conscious understanding of the pain of others and a desire to help relieve that pain. Having a sense of empathy and compassion are important for healthcare workers and PTAs specifically who are helping patients in chronic pain. Every PTA should bring compassion and patience to their work. Both of these qualities are very important if we want to help someone feel more comfortable throughout their therapy treatment.
Online PTA Programs With Classes Nearby
Many local schools with physical therapist assistant programs on-campus will offer some of the coursework online through distance learning. It is worth looking into on-campus PTA Programs with online classes by checking out the schools in your area and seeing what they offer online. Clicking a state below will display all of the accredited PTA schools in that state.
Are the Best Physical Therapy Assistant Programs Online?
Physical therapy assistants are professionals who assist physical therapists in their practice. They provide patients with various treatments such as stretching and mobility, massages, therapeutic exercises, and other physical therapy treatment plans.
So, one may ask, are the best physical therapist assistant programs online? Or are the best PTA programs taught in the classroom?
Physical therapist assistant education programs train individuals to perform these services under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. These physical therapy programs usually last for two years and an online program will still require hands-on learning which provides firsthand experience working in a real clinical practice.
Physical therapy assistant programs are offered at both associate and bachelor degree levels. Prospective students who want to become physical therapy assistants should first complete either an associate or bachelor’s degree in physical therapy assisting followed by passing the NPTE National Physical Therapy Exam for PTAs.
After completing the program and passing the exam, students can apply for licensure. Licensure requires passing a national exam and passing any state examination and potential additional requirements.
Physical therapy assistant schools offer the required PTA associate degree to become a PTA. There are 372 accredited physical therapist assistant schools nationwide (See Complete Database of PTA Programs by State), but not all of them offer their PTA courses online. PTA schools are CAPTE-accredited 2 year associate degree programs that prepare graduates for completing the national licensure exam called the National Physical Therapist Exam (NPTE) and officially becoming a licensed physical therapy assistant (PTA). Certification or a license is required in most states to perform PTA work.
More important than prepping students for the licensing exam, physical therapy assistant schools provide students with the required knowledge and skills to become a valuable physical therapist assistant. A great online physical therapist assistant program will emphasize this.
Logistics of Physical Therapy Assistant Schools Online
Although there are many accredited PTA schools and programs, the entire curriculum won’t be offered through online PTA courses known as distance learning courses. It is important to keep in mind that about 25% of the PTA associate degree curriculum is dedicated to clinical education through hands-on training in person. In fact, PTA students spend an average of 16 weeks in a full time clinical education setting.
So, when you find a physical therapy assistant school online, you must plan for your clinical work and with the help of your program identify a local PT clinic to complete it. Logistically, the rest of your course material and assignments will be administered through an online learning portal. The notion of earning a degree online is not new. Online education began over two decades ago. But it is still something entirely new to anyone who has never done it before.
If youāre a first-time distance learning student, itās important to understand the online education process and the requirements of the program youāre interested in. The grey box below contains details on the online education process to help you understand how your online program works.
In-Person Training
The first thing to know about this program is that it will be completed in the same way as most online medical courses. You will be able to do all of your basic coursework in lectures, reading, and written assignments online. Physical therapy training requires hands-on experiences, so online programs are supplemented with on-campus lab sessions and clinical experiences. This is to be expected because physical therapy professionals provide a hands-on service and need to engage with patients in person.
The PTA Associates Degree
The first step for any PTA career in the U.S. is to earn an associate degree. Generally it can take two years of full-time study to complete, but many people choose to take the course online or through a campus-based community or technical college program. Depending on the pace you choose to study, online PTA degree programs may take a bit more time than traditional on-campus ones. Some online programs could take up to three years or more to complete all general education and PTA coursework as well as all hands-on practicum requirements depending on your pace.
Physical Therapy Assistant Programs Online Course Structure
All online PTA programs consist of a hybrid program, which is a combination of online and in-person work. A few programs offer some courses in a fully-online format while others are mixed with on-campus labs and clinical experiences. For detailed information on the online PTA course curriculum and which classes are fully online or partially online or fully in person, please view our table of PTA classes above.
Online courses are typically asynchronous. These types of courses can be accessed at any time and completed at a student’s own pace. Distance learning students may not be able to attend live lectures and related events. The good news is, they still have ample opportunities for success with flexible course options and deadlines. There are times, though, when students will need to log in to a live streamed lecture or event that has a particular time.
Program Goals of Physical Therapy Assistant Schools
The main objective of physical therapist assistant schools is to graduate capable, knowledgeable, adaptable, self-confident, and service-oriented patient care providers. The education offered by PTA schools prepares graduates for performing selected functions in a PT clinic such as data collection and intervention as well as assessing the patientās safety and response to these interventions.
Of course, the PTA will be working under the supervision and direction of a physical therapist but preparing PTAs with sufficient education is crucial to their success. Physical therapy assistant schools look to ensure that PTAs can perform their functions in a legal, ethical, effective, and safe manner.
Another important aspect of PTA school is teaching the students to effectively communicate with other members of the health care and physical therapy teams they work with. Additionally, learning communication skills for interacting with patients, members of their family, and other caregivers is emphasized. Cooperative work with other health care providers is very important to a PTAs success. Graduates of PTA schools will be prepared to assist physical therapists in educating other health care providers and offering psychosocial support for patients, their families, and their caregivers all while considering individual, economic, and cultural differences.
As you can see, in addition to educating PTA students on the necessary sciences and procedures, or technical aspects to their career, social and communication skills are highly important and emphasized in physical therapist assistant schools.
Physical Therapist Assistant Schools Tuition and Fees
Surely you are curious how much a PTA education is going to cost you. Below is 2008 data on the annual tuition and fees ratesā mean expense for PTA schools. These figures remain consistent for many current students. It should be noted that there are many student loans and other financial aid options available for physical therapy assistant degrees.
Mean Annual Tuition & Fees
- Public In-State PTA School: $7,816
- Private PTA School: $26,493
Going to college is expensive, even for an associate degree, and cost is often the main barrier to obtaining a degree. Fortunately, there are a number of financial aid options for PTA students that can help alleviate the financial burden
If physical therapist assistant schools are too expensive for you, then make sure you contact the PTA school directly to learn about potential financial aid opportunities. If you feel that you can afford PTA school but arenāt sure if it is worth your investment of time and money, then checkout how much a physical therapy assistant salary is.
Scholarships & Grants
Scholarships and grants are not like loans – they don’t need to be paid back. However, this is where many PTA students make their first mistake; they assume that there is no chance for obtaining scholarships or grants. The truth that many students donāt realize is that there are numerous foundations out there dedicated specifically to providing scholarships for PTA applicants with the qualities required.
For example, many scholarships related to physical therapy are sponsored by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). In fact, they have at least three different types of scholarships that they regularly award to minority group members. In addition, dozens of other non-physical therapy specific colleges also regularly award PTA students with scholarships.
Student Loans
Within the United States, student loans are the most common form of financial aid for college. Although there are several methods of acquiring a loan, such as state and federal governments and private lenders, federally issued loans account for the bulk of these funds. Students can access these loans by applying for them using FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) forms provided by their college or university.
Why Enroll in an Online PTA Program?
There aren’t any disadvantages to studying online considering you still get hands-on clinical training in person.
However, online physical therapy assistant programs come with a number of distinct benefits and advantages over the traditional on-campus format such as:
Lower Costs
Tuition for physical therapy assistant programs may be cheaper than traditional on-campus programs. In some cases, online programs cost a little more. Nevertheless, students in online programs will still benefit from reduced costs overall. They will save money on gas and parking when attending class, food eating out and they won’t have to pay a babysitter or dog walker.
Flexibility
Most online courses provide the student with the tools and flexibility to work whenever is most convenient for them, which allows them to create their own study schedule and progress at their own speed. This means you can keep your day job and continue watching your young children while you study and complete your education.
No Commuting
Taking online courses can help you save money since you won’t need to commute and you won’t need to buy textbooks. You’ll also be able to spend more time on things that really matter like family and friends.
Comparing Online Physical Therapy Assistant Programs
It is important to look at the same criteria for each PTA school that you compare. The following criteria are the most important factors to consider and compare when choosing a PTA program online.
Accreditation Status
Accreditation is the key to an online PTA program. CAPTE accreditation assures students that their program meets or exceeds the required education quality standards.
Graduating an accredited program and obtaining a PTA license is an important qualification for potential hires. Itās something that employers weigh heavily when assessing the qualifications of potential hires. In the United States, entry-level PTAs are accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), which sets the standard for basic education and experience requirements.
NPTE Pass Rates
In order for a physical therapist assistant to work in the United States, they must be licensed by the state. In all 50 states, the National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE) is required to become licensed.
So, considering PTA graduatesā NPTE pass rates is a good idea before you commit to a program. But where do you find the information? It’s often on the program website, if not you can go to the Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy (FSBPT) webpage.
Hands-On In Person Training
All physical therapy assistant programs, whether online or in-person, include a clinical practicum. If you want one that is near your home and fits your schedule, you should consider programs that provide access to quality clinical facilities close to your home. Think about what’s best for you and your schedule when choosing a program. Clinical practicum/internship components are normally full-time, but it is possible to attend part-time. It is important to plan your externship/internship with any online program you choose.
State Licensing After Your Online PTA Program
To become a physical therapy assistant in the U.S., you need to hold a license which is regulated by individual states in addition to DC, PR, & US territories. You can use our state licensing tool to access your stateās PTA license requirements, forms, and fees.
Specific requirements and processes differ by state jurisdiction, but all require that you take and pass the NPTE to become licensed. You may also need to fulfill general requirements, including criminal background check, CPR certification, and the purchase of a license application processing fee.
Some state licensures require applicants to be eighteen years of age. Also, licensure is only accepted in the state that gives the license. So for example, if you want to work as a PTA in State A and then move to State B, you will need to get licensed again in your new state. It is a good idea to start learning your stateās requirements as soon as possible so you arenāt delayed in beginning work upon graduation.
About the NPTE
The National Physical Therapy Exam (NPTE), or NPTE for PTAs, is a computer-administered exam that consists of 200 multiple choice questions and must be taken at one of the many Prometric test centers located throughout the United States on specific dates.
The test can be taken in any jurisdiction where it is available. Exam participants have a maximum of 5 hours to finish the exam. The passing score range is from 600 and above (out of 800).
The NPTE may be taken up to three times in succession, and only six times all together. The exam fee is $485.00 so youāll want to pass it on the first try. The NPTE for PTA exam is governed by the FSBPT or The Federation of State Boards of Physical Therapy. For more information on exam policies, visit their website where you can review detailed eligibility requirements.
There is a wealth of materials that can be used for your exam preparation, including some which can be found at a library or bookstore for free. Find out more from your schoolās library or at the FSBPT website to know about what resources are available.
